Geotextiles > Functions
Separation
Separation is the function of a geotextile used to prevent mixing of a subgrade or sub-base soil and an aggregate cover material (sub-base, base, select embankment) in civil engineering works as road and railways constructions .
This is the most important geotextile function for roads, particularly when building on weak to moderate strength subgrade soils. When weaker soils and/or wet conditions are encountered, higher strength nonwoven Tessilbrenta geotextiles are commonly used for roadway stabilization. Therefore, equally as important as separation, a properly selected stabilization geotextile and the overlying free draining base layer can improve "filtration and drainage" of the subgrade providing a means for dissipating excess pore water pressures.
